2008 Victorian Long Distance Championships

Sunday October 19, 2008

Map: Chewton Diggings (near Chewton)  Scale 1:10,000

Organising club:  Melbourne Forest Racers

Terrain: Spur gully with areas of detailed gold-mining.  Vegetation varies from open and fast to areas of coffee bush and patches of blackberries.  Courses will have a good mix of route choice, detail and easier pines.  The extensive track network means tracks will play an important part in all courses.  Unique terrain, much like continental Europe but including Aussie goldmining.  Probably the most similar terrain in Australia to the 2009 World Championships in Hungary. Some really open areas and other parts with low visibility will test everybody’s ability to value track speed against terrain speed in choosing routes. As you can see from the photos, some parts of the pines will be slower underfoot and the Course setter Warren Key and his team are plotting furiously to tease your brain on each control .Route choice will truly be a highlight.

Location: Near Chewton, 5km east of Castlemaine; will be signposted from the Chewton area.

First start:

Event enquiries: Blair Trewin (b.trewin@bom.gov.au, 03-94553516).
